BySpire vertical farm
At Økern in Oslo
Byspire is currently located at Økern in Oslo, Norway. With Norway’s largest vertical farm we are delivering fresh products to restaurants and online retail.
We believe it is possible to reduce import, food waste and unnecessary packaging, by producing locally with the latest technology.
In Norway we import 70% of all the fruit and vegetables we consume. BySpire aims to reduce this by 30% on selected products, by producing food locally, in an area-effective and sustainable manner. We will achieve this by utilizing innovative technology and knowledge - to modernize the production of herbs, salads and other vegetables. Our vision is to optimize resource usage around us to contribute to a sustainable future!
The concept behind vertical farming is, plants growing in beds that are stacked in the height. By doing this we save a lot of space for growing.
The racks are put into a closed environment, and the growing conditions are fully controlled to create the perfect environment for the plants
The plants grow in water and nutrient solutions, which are recirculated. No soil is used, and the roots are exposed directly to the nutrient solution.
As the production is stacked, and indoors, we use LED-technology to give the plants the light they need to grow. Sensors help control the growing conditions and to check for any irregularities. Data is used to maximize the quality and yield.
